Rising Heart Attacks Among Young People in Jammu and Kashmir
Possible causes are:-
- Ongoing conflict and violence that has plagued the region for decades. The political unrest, human rights violations, curfews, lockdowns have created a stressful and traumatic environment for the people living there. A study found that 45% of the adult population in Kashmir valley showed symptoms of significant mental distress, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These mental health conditions can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases by affecting the blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol levels, and inflammation in the body.
- Lack of access to quality health care services and preventive measures. The Department of Health and Medical Education reported that there are 4433 government health institutions at primary, secondary and tertiary levels with 6674 doctors in-position in Jammu and Kashmir. This means that there is one doctor for every 1880 people, which is lower than the World Health Organization's recommendation of one doctor for every 1000 people. Moreover, many people in rural and remote areas face difficulties in reaching the health facilities due to poor road connectivity, harsh weather conditions, and security issues. As a result, many people do not receive timely diagnosis, treatment, or follow-up care for their heart problems.
- Changing lifestyle and dietary habits of the population. With the advent of modernization, urbanization, and globalization, many people have adopted a sedentary lifestyle that involves less physical activity and more screen time. Additionally, many people have switched to a high-fat, high-salt, high-sugar diet that is rich in processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables. These factors can contribute to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol levels, which are all risk factors for heart disease.
- Post-Covid complications have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Covid-19 can cause inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), which can lead to long-term damage. This damage can increase the risk of heart disease in young people who have had Covid-19.
To prevent the rising trend of heart attacks among young people in Kashmir, it is important to address these causes at multiple levels.
- At the individual level, people should adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management. They should also avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as these habits can damage the heart and blood vessels. At the community level, people should seek professional help for their mental health issues and support each other in coping with the trauma and stress. They should also raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of heart attack and how to respond in case of an emergency.
- At the policy level, the government should improve the availability and accessibility of quality health care services and preventive measures for the people of Kashmir. They should also work towards resolving the conflict and violence that has been affecting the lives and well-being of millions of people for decades.
Heart attacks are a preventable and treatable condition that can be avoided by taking care of one's physical and mental health. By addressing the causes of increasing in heart attacks among young people in Kashmir, we can hope to save lives and improve the quality of life for everyone.
