Why are more people dying by suicide in Kashmir?
Kashmir has been witnessing a surge in suicide cases in recent years. According to the government's Crime Gazette for 2021, Kashmir recorded 586 suicide cases last year, and 472 in 2020. The region has a higher suicide rate than other Indian states and recorded 2,612 deaths by suicide from 2010 to 2018. Some studies estimate that as many as 45% of the 7 million-strong population suffers from some kind of mental distress

Causes of suicide in Kashmir
There are various reasons why someone may attempt to take their own life. Some of the common causes of suicide include:
- Mental disorders and substance use disorders: Many people diagnosed with mental health or substance use disorders may be more prone to suicide than others. Some of the mental disorders that are associated with an elevated risk of suicide include depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), and psychosis. Substance use disorders, especially involving multiple substances, can also increase the likelihood of suicide.
- Stress and trauma: For years Kashmir has been enduring a prolonged period of conflict and violence which has subjected its people to types of stress and trauma. These include instability, the presence of restrictions, on movement and activities disruptions to internet access lack of employment opportunities, poverty, displacement, from homes and the heartache of losing loved ones. These challenging circumstances can greatly impact the well being and overall happiness of individuals living in Kashmir leaving them feeling devoid of hope or agency.
- Stigma and lack of awareness: In Kashmir, where the majority of the population follows the faith, there exists a societal stigma surrounding suicide. This stigma acts as a barrier preventing individuals from seeking assistance, for their well being. Suicide is often seen as an act or a topic that should not be openly discussed due, to its nature. Additionally there is a lack of awareness and education regarding the causes warning signs and available support resources for those dealing with thoughts or feelings. Consequently many individuals may fail to recognize or admit their struggles or those of others and may feel unequipped to provide help or intervention.
- Lack of access to mental health care: Even if someone wants to get help for their mental health issues, they may face various barriers in accessing quality and affordable mental health care in Kashmir. There is a shortage of trained and qualified mental health professionals and facilities in the region. There is also a lack of coordination and integration between different sectors and agencies involved in providing mental health services. Moreover, there are social and cultural factors that may deter people from seeking or accepting mental health care, such as stigma, discrimination, or mistrust
- Social Media: One of the factors that may contribute to the increase in suicide rates in Kashmir is the use of social media. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have become popular among Kashmiris, especially the youth, who use them to communicate, share information, express opinions, and seek entertainment. However, social media also has its dark side, as it can expose users to cyberbullying, harassment, hate speech, misinformation, propaganda, and radicalization, Social isolation or peer pressure, and some have developed unrealistic expectations or comparisons with others.
Solutions for suicide prevention in Kashmir
There are several steps that can be taken to prevent suicide in Kashmir. Some of them are:
- Increasing awareness and education: It is important to raise awareness and educate people about the causes and signs of suicide and the available resources for help. This can be done through various media platforms, community outreach programs, school curricula, religious institutions, and peer support groups. People should be encouraged to talk openly about their feelings and seek help when needed.I
- Improving access to mental health care: There is a need to improve the availability and accessibility of quality and affordable mental health care in Kashmir. This can be done by increasing the number of trained and qualified mental health professionals and facilities in the region. There is also a need to improve the coordination and integration between different sectors and agencies involved in providing mental health services. Moreover, there is a need to address the social and cultural barriers that prevent people from seeking or accepting mental health care.
- Providing crisis intervention and support: There is a need to provide crisis intervention and support for people who are at risk of suicide or have attempted suicide. This can be done by establishing helplines, hotlines, chat services, mobile teams, emergency rooms, or other means of reaching out to people who need immediate help. There is also a need to provide follow-up care and support for people who have survived suicide attempts or have lost someone to suicide.
- Promoting positive coping skills: There is a need to promote positive coping skills among people who are facing stress or trauma in their lives. This can be done by teaching them how to manage their emotions, thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and problems in healthy ways. This can also be done by providing them with opportunities to engage in activities that give them meaning, purpose, joy, or relaxation.
